Ad hoc – Directly Connecting Two WLAN Devices
The procedure described in the last section is especially suitable if you want to have
your computer access an existing network automatically. Therefore, your computer
will be integrated into a network structure typical of a home or corporate network.
However, sometimes this is not necessary or even not desired. If you only wish to
exchange data quickly with another WLAN-enabled desktop or notebook computer,
you can do this without any need of a router or network. This is especially helpful
when travelling, when onsite at a client’s, at a fair or when visiting a friend who
doesn't have a network installed. In this case, two computers can interconnect
directly via WLAN. This is called an
Ad-hoc connection
.
Before you can start the setup you must plug the WLAN adapter into your computer
and enable it as usual. Of course, you will also have to enable the WLAN function-
ality on the other computer.
Despite the fact that both computers are of the same category when using an Ad-
hoc connection, they play different roles from the technical point of view. One com-
puter will set up the connection and will be waiting for another device to communi-
cate with. The second device will only search for this new connection and join it. As
soon as the connection has been established, both desktop and/or notebook com-
puters have the same capabilities.
Setting Up the Connection on the First Computer
First you will need to set up one of the two computers to create the connection. You
can do this on any of the two devices. Once the connection has been established,
both computers will have the same capabilities.
Proceed as follows:
1.
First open the Network and Sharing Center. To do this, click
Start/Control Panel
to open Control Panel. Select the group
Network and Internet
and then the option
Network and Sharing Center
.
From the Network and Sharing Center choose the task
Set up a connection or
network
on the left side.
2.
A new window appears offering different options for creating a new network
connection. Select the option
Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer)
network
from here and click
Next
to proceed to the next window.
