Service - Drive Unit
Disassembly
Note: Refer to
“
Auger System Drive Unit
”
diagram on page 30 for reference numbers.
1.
Remove 12, (#17) socket head cap screws and 12 (#16) washers from cover (#14).
2.
Lift the cover (#14) off the assembly. Item (#13) thrust washer, usually remains with the cover.
3.
Lift (#12) sun gear from (#11) secondary carrier assembly.
4.
Remove (#11) secondary carrier assembly from (#10) ring gear.
5.
Remove (#10) from (#6) hub.
6.
One tab of (#8) lock washer will be engaged in a slot of (#9) bearing nut. Bend the tab back to release (#8)
lock washer. Remove (#9) bearing nut, (#8), and (#7) thrust washer.
7.
Take care to not damage the (#1) shaft splines and threads. Note: the (#3) bearing cone is designed with a
slip fit for (#1) shaft.
8.
Remove (#2) seal and (#3) bearing cones from (#6) hub. Inspect (#4) bearing cups in (#6) hub. It is not
necessary to remove these parts unless replacing.
Assembly
Note: Refer to

diagram on page 30 for reference numbers.
1.
Press new (#4) bearing cups in each side of (#6) hub. It is recommended to replace (#4) bearing cups and
(#3) bearing cones in sets.
2.
Assemble (#3) bearing cone into (#4) bearing cup at the seal end of (#6) hub and press a new (#2) seal into
(#6) hub.
3.
Lubricate (#2) shaft oil seal and lower (#6) hub onto (#1) output shaft. Be sure to keep (#6) hub centered to
prevent damage to the oil seal. Note: Heavy duty oil seals have no lubricant on (#2) seal, (#1) output shaft
or (#6) hub.
4.
Assemble (#3) inner bearing cone over (#1) output shaft. Place (#3) bearing cone over the output shaft
bearing journal. Press (#3) bearing cone down until the rollers are just touching (#4) bearing cup. Caution:
Avoid pressing (#3) bearing cone too far.
Note:
A special locknut wrench (PN 613A) is required for the removal of the bearing locknut. Contact
Auburn Gear to purchase this and other service tools.
