Chapter 3: Maintenance and Component Installation
The 2.5" hard drives are mounted in the drive carriers to simplify their installation and removal
from the chassis. These carriers also help promote proper airflow for the drive bays.
Warning:
Except for short periods of time while swapping hard drives, do not operate the server
with the hard drives bays empty.
Installing a 2.5" Drive into the Hard Drive Carrier
1. Remove the four screws holding the dummy drive to the carrier.
2. Remove the dummy drive from the carrier.
3. Install a new drive into the carrier with the printed circuit board side facing down so that
the mounting holes align with those in the carrier.
4. Secure the hard drive by tightening all four screws.
5. Use the open handle to replace the drive carrier into the chassis. Make sure to close the
drive carrier handle.
Note that if a node is pulled out of the chassis, the hard drives associated with that node will
power down as well. The hard drives are hot-swappable and may be removed from the node
without removing the node from the chassis or powering down the system.
Caution: Enterprise level hard disk drives are recommended for use in Supermicro chas-
sis and servers. For information on recommended HDDs, visit the Supermicro website
