Hatch
Hatch parts are designated with an “H” followed by a numeric. Parts have been
numbered so that the Hatch assembly and required parts follows in numeric
order from H1 to H5.
31. Assemble the hatch sheeting H1 from parts H1a and H1b so that etched
part numbers and lines are on a common side. Bond with thin CA.
32. With H1 set etched side
UP
, fit large tab of the hatch rails H2 and H3 to the
large slot in H1. Tack glue at the points of contact only.
33. Turn the hatch over and continue to fit the sheeting H1 over the small tabs in
H2 and H3. Hold hatch on a flat surface and bond each tab where it
protrudes through the sheeting with thin CA. Turn the hatch back over and
bond the rest of the rails to the sheeting.
34. Align plywood part H4, matching the hole in H4 over the corresponding
etched circle at one end of the hatch assembly. Ensure that the outer edge
of H4 is flush with the edge of H1, then bond.
Editors Note: During final assembly H4 will receive a magnet that will
engage the magnet in the hatch catch within the fuselage radio
compartment. I’d suggest skipping ahead to step 89 now to install this
magnet within the hatch.
35. Fit and bond ply part H5 between the etched line and the edge of H1 at the
other end of the hatch. H5 will extend beyond the edge of H1.
36. Install hatch to fuselage bottom.
DO NOT BOND.
Check for proper fit of
hatch within the fuselage. If the fit seems too tight, lightly sand the edge of
H4 and/or the outside surface of the rails. Now sand the exterior of the
hatch smooth to flow with the fuselage.
Set the hatch and fuselage assemblies aside until Final Assembly.
