Final Assembly
(continued)
74.
Tape the horizontal stabilizer to the work surface, with low-tack masking tape. Tape the
elevator,
bevelled side down,
along the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer. Leave a
gap no larger than 1/32 in. between the two parts. Cut a length of clear tape, the
approximate length of the hinge. Cut this down the
middle
, leaving a strip of tape about
1/4 in. wide. More than this is unnecessary, and adds unwanted weight to the model. Apply
tape over the gap between the stabilizer and elevator. Trim if necessary. Flex the elevator
back and forth to ensure that it moves freely, without binding. If the elevator does not move
freely, remove the tape hinge and repeat the hinging process, increasing the gap between
the surfaces slightly.
Pro Builder Tip:
When hinging control surfaces, we place a piece of wire between the
surfaces to be assembled. Use one of the wires included in the kit as a temporary fixture to
help align the parts. Using a spacer will ensure proper movement of the control surfaces.
Remove the wire after your control surfaces are assembled.
75.
Follow the same procedure outlined in Step 74 to hinge the rudder to the vertical stabilizer.
76.
Lay the assembled stabilizer/elevator on the work surface with the
bottom
bevelled side
up
. Slit the covering over the control horn slot on the
right
side of the elevator. Fit the ply
control horn E5 (sheet 07/08, 1/32 in. ply) to the slot in the elevator. Ensure that the control
horn is fully seated in the elevator, and that the hole at the end of the control horn is
oriented over the hinge line. Wick a few small drops of medium CA around the base of the
control horn, to secure it.
77.
Follow the same procedure as outlined in Step 76, to install the rudder control horn part R4
(sheet 07/08, 1/32 in. ply) to the
left
side of the rudder.
78.
Remove the covering from the hole in the middle of the horizontal stabilizer,
top
and
bottom,
and the notch at stabilizer leading edge center.
Now from top side of horizontal stabilizer
,
pass
the
rear
tab of the vertical fin through hole within stabilizer. The
front
of the vertical fin
should overhang the
front
of the horizontal stabilizer. Again, ensure that the vertical fin/
rudder assembly is mounted to the
top
, not the
bottom
of the horizontal stabilizer. The
elevator control horn must locate to the
bottom
of the vertical fin/elevator assembly.
79.
Remove the covering from the two holes at the
top rear
of the fuselage. These holes are
designed to receive the tabs on the vertical stabilizer, as they pass through the horizontal
stabilizer.
80.
Fit the tail assembly to the
rear
of the fuselage. View the model from the
front
and
rear
,
ensuring that the tail surfaces are perpendicular
(form a 90 degree angle)
to each other and
to the fuselage
sides
and
top
. Bond the surfaces to each other and the fuselage, by
running a small bead of medium CA along the seams where the surfaces meet.
