Vertical Stabilizer and Rudder
(continued)
49.
Use a sanding block to bevel the
right
side of the rudder leading edge to a 45 degree angle.
Set the completed vertical fin and rudder assemblies aside until required in final assembly.
Horizontal Stabilizer and Elevator
Horizontal stabilizer parts are designated with the letter “H” followed by a number. Parts have been
numbered so that the Horizontal stabilizer assembly follows a sequential order, H1 to H6. Elevator parts
are designated with the letter “E” followed by a number. Parts have been numbered so that the elevator
assembly follows a sequential order, E1 through E5.
50.
Build the horizontal stabilizer over the
Horizontal Stabilizer/Elevator
detail drawing on the
plan set. Use parts H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 (sheet 06/08, 3/32 in. balsa). Repeat for
the other half of the horizontal stab. Bond the assembly with CA. Next, build the elevator
over the drawing on the plan set, using parts E1, E2, E3, E4, and E5 (sheet 06/08, 3/32 in.
balsa). Repeat for the other half of the elevator. Bond with CA. Sand the horizontal
stabilizer and elevator, to prepare them for covering. Round the leading edge of the
horizontal stabilizer, and leave the trailing edge square.
51.
Bevel the
bottom
of the elevator’s leading edge at a 45 degree angle.
Set the completed horizontal stabilizer and elevator assemblies aside until required in final
assembly.
Sub-Fin
52.
Locate the sub-fin, part SF (sheet 06/08, 3/32 in. balsa). Prepare the sub-fin for covering by
lightly sanding.
Set the completed sub-fin aside until required in final assembly.
Scale Model Engine
Scale model engine parts are designated with a number “0”. Parts have been numbered so that scale
model engine assembly follows a sequential order, 1 through 13. Also required for scale model engine
assembly is a 3/4 in. length of 1/16 in. diameter aluminum tube, located in the hardware bag.
53.
Slide parts 1, 2, and 3 (sheet 05/08, 3/32 in. balsa) on the 1/16 in. diameter tube.
Leave about 1/16 in. of tubing extending beyond balsa part 1. Bond with CA.
54.
Locate the remainder of the scale model engine parts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13
(sheet 07/08, 1/32 in. ply). Slide them on the 1/16 in. aluminum tubing, in numerical order,
4 through 13. Bond with CA.
Pro Builder Tip:
We painted our scale model engine flat black, and then dressed up the
edges of the cooling fins with silver paint.
Final Assembly
55.
Cover the wing and tail surfaces with a high-quality, light-weight covering material.
