Appendix A: Troubleshooting
Should you have difficulty that is not outlined below please call SP Scientific Service
(see the Warranty section).
WARNING: THIS EQUIPMENT IS SUPPLIED BY TWO SOURCES OF POWER. CONTACT MAY CAUSE
ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR BURN. TURN OFF AND LOCK-OUT SYSTEM AND UPS OUTPUT POWER
BEFORE SERVICING.
General Troubleshooting
The system will not respond
to the commands sent from
the Computer
Check that the Unit is plugged in and the circuit breaker on the rear of the system is
switched on.
Check to ensure that the communication cable is connected between the computer and the
freeze dryer.
Shut down the computer, power off the LyoStar II. Restart the LyoStar II and the computer.
Freeze dryer starts "hard".
Makes "chugging" noises at
start up.
Most often caused by low voltage supply to the system. Check the wall voltage and amps
against the freeze-dryers' serial tag. If supply is low SP Scientific can recommend a
transformer.
This freeze dryer, like any other refrigeration system, is not meant to be activated and
deactivated in a short period of time. If the system was just deactivated and the chugging
noise occurred upon reactivation you may choose to turn off the freeze-dryer and allow it to
sit for approximately 1 hour. The system should then be able to be turned on without the
chugging noise.
Vacuum pump will not
activate.
Check that the vacuum pump is plugged in to outlet provided in the bottom of the electrical
box.
Make certain the vacuum pumps
ON/OFF
switch (on the vacuum pump's electrical box) in
the
ON
position.
The vacuum pump will not activate until the condenser temperature is below –40°C.
Tray Dryer shelf
temperature fluctuation.
Check to make sure that the system has not reset due to a power outage or other alarm
condition.
Check the Heat Transfer Fluid.
Condenser door has hairline
cracks or is crazed.
Caused by the door's contact with organic solvents. Defrost condensate should be drained
from the system as quickly as possible. Lucite door should be replaced with another Lucite
door or polypropylene end plate (lose visual access but gain durability). A liquid nitrogen
trap can be retrofitted to the system if organic solvents will be used routinely.
