Symmetrical earth connection

Ideal condition, stud is located in the centre 
of the two earth connections.

Asymmetrical earth connection

The arc is deflected to the side where there 
is a lower current density.

Workpiece geometry

Additional workpiece masses disturb the 
arc symmetry.
