The Enable GPRS Client Option
The Serial GSM Gateway uses GPRS technology to extend its Console over the Internet. The Serial GSM
Gateway has two modes it can use to do this extension of the console.
1. Server mode
2. Client mode
Server mode is discussed in the previous section.
Client mode turns the Serial GSM Gateway into a terminal client. When this mode is selected, the Serial GSM
Gateway will establish a connection to the mobile network operator and initiates a GPRS connection to the
Internet.
Once this connection is established the Serial GSM Gateway attempts to connect to the clients terminal server
(Virtual Terminal Emulation application in server or listening mode) using the user configurable TCP port and
IP Address supplied by the customer.
The Serial GSM Gateway has two security features to minimize the possibility of threats.
1. A firewall that blocks all ports except for the TCP port that is configured to use for the outbound
connection.
2. A timeout interval where the Serial GSM Gateway will only attempt to connect to the customer’s
terminal server once. If no session has been established then the Serial GSM Gateway will close the
GPRS Internet connection and will no longer attempt to contact the customer’s terminal server.
Once the Serial GSM Gateway has successfully initiated GPRS Client mode and has established a connection to
the customer’s terminal server, the customer will be prompted with the Serial GSM Gateway’s logon screen.
