7. Bench Tests
8. Hunting Tips of the Metal Detector
The center of the search coil is directly above the target with the depth of a
coin-sized target shown on the depth indicator. The symbol "P-P" for
PINPOINT displays on the LCD screen while the detector is operated with
the
PINPOINT
mode.
You should conduct bench tests to become more familiar with the operation
of the detector. Please follow the steps below.
Place the search coil on a flat, non-metallic surface that is several feet
above other metallic objects.
Select the
A/M
mode.
Place various metal objects (coins, bottle caps, nails, etc.) below the
search coil with a distance of 3.14 to 3.93 inches. The detector will make
responses and you can identify the targets with the LCD screen.
Perform this test in all the modes available on the detector. Listen to the
sounds and observe the changes on the LCD screen to be more familiar
with the operation of the detector.
Record the results of your bench tests and refer to them when hunting in
fields.

Once you get familiar with the detector and know how it responses to metals
during bench tests, do more tests in the soil. Bury your targets at recorded
depths to create a "test pilot." Note how various targets read based upon
whether they are lying in the ground, flat or at various angles.
Keep accurate records or surface markers for your test pilot to indicate
targets and their depths. Try testing these targets again in several months
after the ground has settled, during periods of extreme drought or after a
soaking rain. Take notes of any changes in how these targets are detected.
If you never detect metal targets before, start searching in areas with sandy
and loose soil to make it easier to learn how to use the metal detector,
pinpoint and dig targets.
Keep the search coil at the height of about 0.78-1.18 inches above the
ground and parallel to the ground at all times for best detection results.
