INTRODUCTION
Thank you for choosing the Siemens TPS9 Transient Voltage
Surge Suppressor.
This manual provides instructions for installing the TPS9
Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS). The TPS9 TVSS
(Figure 1) can be mounted three ways. The preferred method
of installation is to mount the TVSS directly to the outside of
the electrical distribution equipment using the integral chase
nipple on the body of the TVSS. It can also be installed against
a panel/wall using installer supplied hardware, or it can be
installed using an optional Flush Mount Kit. The latter two
methods require use of additional conduit and hardware (not
provided).
Please read and understand all information in this manual prior
to installation. The procedures contained herein are not
intended to supersede local or national electrical codes.
Check
all applicable electrical codes to ensure compliance.
In all
instances, local and national electrical code requirements are
to be followed.
The TPS9 is a single port parallel TVSS designed for service
entrance and downstream electrical distribution equipment
applications. The TVSS uses a chase nipple for installation, and
offers 80kA, 100kA, 120kA, or 150kA per phase surge current
capabilities.
The TPS9 provides protection from damaging transient volt-
age surges and spikes. Proper installation is imperative to maxi-
mize the effectiveness and overall performance of this device.
This device must be installed by a licensed electrician.
The
electrician should follow the steps outlined in this manual to
insure proper installation.
Note:
Siemens products are extensively tested to industry stan-
dards as set by IEEE C62.41 and C62.45, for Categories A, B,
and C. The TPS9 is listed to the most recent edition of UL 1449.
This product is suitable for installation on electrical distribu-
tion equipment capable of delivering not more than 200,000
rms symmetrical amperes.
This device features internal overcurrent and overtemperature
protection that will disconnect affected surge protection com-
ponents at the end of their useful life but will maintain power
to the load - now unprotected. If this situation is undesirable
for the application, follow these instructions for servicing or
replacing the device.
During installation into an electrical system, the TPS9 must NOT
be energized until the electrical system is installed, inspected
and tested. Confirm that N-G bonding is per NEC. All conduc-
tors must be connected and functional, including neutral (if
required). The voltage rating of the device and system must
always be verified before energizing the TVSS.

SAFETY INFORMATION
This section provides pertinent safety information that must
be considered before installing the TVSS.
•
Do not install this device during a lightning storm.
•
This device is rated NEMA 4X. Suitable for indoor and
outdoor applications.
•
Do not install the surge protector in a hot or excessively
moist location.
•
Other safety considerations are as listed on the
following page:
Page 1
Failure to follow the guidelines in this manual can lead to
abnormally high voltage being applied to the TVSS. This may
cause the TPS9 unit to become inoperative. The warranty does
not cover an incorrectly installed device.
Failure to disconnect the TVSS during elevated voltage testing
will result in damage to the suppression components and/or
other electronic components (see Safety Information).
Do not
high potential test the distribution system with the TVSS
connected.
