Allow the thermometer to adapt to the 
ambient temperature.

Emissivity of the object is 
greatly different from 0.95. 

Check the emissivity of the object 
with reference to "Measurement of an 
object having an emissivity other than 
0.95".   
If the emissivity is unknown, check it 
by applying paint or tape as 
described.   

There is a high temperature 
object near the thermometer 
and it is affected by heat. 

Shield the heat source with shielding 
plates etc. 

It is affected by sunlight. 

Because the direct sunlight reflects 
on the water surface in a sunny day 
the correct temperature cannot be
