Note: If the area of the object is much larger than the spot size, the accuracy of measurement is
affected. Also, if the area of the object is much smaller than the spot size, the accuracy of
measurement may be affected by inclusion of a part that is not supposed to be measured.
If the measuring distance is less than 120 mm, the accuracy of measurement is affected.
8-2 High-temperature Measurement
Operating the thermometer continuously to measure a high-temperature (200°C or more) object at
a short distance (30 mm or less) for a long time (three minutes or more) may cause a drop in the
performance of the infrared lens. When measuring a hot object of 200°C or more, the distance
should be 30 mm or more and operation should be completed within a short time.
There is also the risk of burning your hand by accidental contact with an excessively hot object.
Secure a safe distance from the object if the object is known to be hot.
Note: Measuring an object of 316°C or more may damage the infrared lens and cause loss of
measurement accuracy. Never measure an object whose temperature is outside the allowable
temperature range.
8-3 Measurement of an object with an emissivity other than 0.95
Apply heat-resistant paint or tape that has an emissivity close to 0.95 to the object to be
measured.
Since the emissivity of metals is lower than 0.95, the temperature of a metal surface cannot be
measured with this thermometer. Apply heat-resistant paint or tape as mentioned above before
measuring the temperature.
Measurement accuracy is affected by a frozen surface or dirt on the surface of an object. Wipe
the surface thoroughly so that it is even and homogeneous.
The table below lists materials whose emissivity is significantly different from 0.95. Note that the
emissivity varies with the temperature and surface condition of the object; the values are given for
reference only.
