time period is achieved. Equalization may be terminated manually and re-started
when adequate sun is available. Also, please remove all loads on the battery to
ensure that full current from the panels is available to complete equalization in
one session.
Temperature Compensated Battery Charging
Please read background information on temperature compensation under heading
“Effect of Temperature on Lead Acid Batteries” on page 11.
A Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) is available for temperature compensated battery
charging.
!
CAUTION!
The wiring of the Temperature Sensor is polarized and is marked (+) and (-).
Please observe correct polarity of connection to terminals BTS+ and BTS-.
BTS consists of a temperature sensing probe that is installed on the (-) Negative
battery post (Fig. 6.2). The temperature of the battery post reflects the approximate
temperature of the electrolyte. A pair of 10 metres wires (marked + & -) connect the
temperature sensing probe to the 2 terminals marked (+) BTS and (-) BTS at the back
of the unit.
As the battery gets warmer, the gassing increases. As the battery gets colder, it
becomes more resistant to charging. Depending on how much the battery electrolyte
temperature varies, it is important to adjust the charging for temperature changes.
Various voltage set points given in the specifications are indicated at a reference
temperature of 25ºC / 77ºF.
It is recommended that Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) is used if the battery
electrolyte temperature (measured at the + terminal stud) fluctuates more than 5ºC to
10ºC (9ºF to 18ºF) from the reference temperature of 25ºC (77ºF).
The Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) corrects the Absorption, Equalization & Float
Voltage by the following values (reference temperature is 25ºC / 77ºF):
•
12V battery: –0.030V per °C (–0.017V per °F).
•
24V battery: –0.060V per °C (–0.033V per °F).
The temperature sensed by the BTS at the battery is displayed on the LCD screen under
the screen display “Heatsink BTS”.
Typical compensation is given in Table 6.4 below:
