Commissioning
Write date of installation on battery label where indicated.
Replace gear tray and secure fixing screws. Check the fluorescent tube
is in place. Finally the diffuser should be snapped onto the body.
Apply mains to the installation and check that the red LED indicator is
illuminated. On the maintained fitting the fluorescent lamp will also light
in the maintained mode. After the fitting has been connected to the
supply for 15 minutes isolate the mains supply.
Check that on the maintained model the fluorescent lamp remains
alight and on the non-maintained model the fluorescent lamp
illuminates immediately the supply is removed. Restore the mains
supply. The battery will fully charge in 24 hours.
The red LED indicator illuminates to show that the batteries are
receiving a charge. This must be alight at all times except when there
is a power failure .
A full charge and discharge cycle should be carried out after
installation. If on this initial duration test the full duration of three hours
is not achieved, then the 24 hour charge and three hour discharge
should be repeated. This is because batteries which have been kept in
stock for some time in a discharged condition sometimes need to be
‘conditioned’ for one or two cycles so as to commence normal
operation.
Operation - RS stock nos. 566-746 and 236-259
WARNING: Isolate the incoming supply before connection. S1 and
associated wiring will carry mains voltage.
Maintained Model
Remote switching from maintained to non-maintained operation is
possible on the maintained model only.
If this facility is required, the link from the terminals L1 and L2, on the
terminal block, should be removed and a mains switch S1 connected in
its place (see figure 1).
Care should be taken not to disturb the existing connection in terminal
L2 which must remain.
Note: The light may be switched off when not required without
affecting the emergency mode of operation.
Opening S1 changes the unit from maintained to non-maintained
operation. If this facility is required the link between L1 and L2 must be
removed.
Bank remote switching
Bank remote switching is also possible for up to ten emergency lighting
units.
This is achieved by removing the link from between terminal L1 and L2,
the remaining supply connection into terminal L2 should be left
connected.
A second live supply via a 1 amp fuse and mains switch should be
connected to terminal L1 (see figure 2).
Operation of the mains switch converts all units from maintained to
non-maintained operation.
Note: For ease of installation a 3-core cable mains rated may be
used.
Opening S1 changes all units from maintained to non-maintained
operation. If this facility is required then all links between terminals L1
and L2 must be removed.
Testing and maintenance
A programme of routine testing is described in BS5266 Part 1 and this
should be strictly adhered to.
This minimum testing and maintenance required is as follows:
Tests
Every day check that the red LED indicator is glowing.
Every month isolate mains and check that the emergency lamp
illuminates.
Every six months isolate mains for one hour and check that the
emergency lamp(s) remains alight for this period.
Every 2 years isolate mains supply for three hours and check that the
emergency lamp remains alight for this period. Ensure that the building
will be unoccupied for the following 24 hours to completely recharge the
battery.
Note: The mains should be isolated by means of a double pole key-
operated or seIf-resetting switch rated minimum 1 amp inductive
at supply voltage.
Preventative maintenance
Clean the diffuser at regular intervals. Every nine months replace
fluorescent lamp on maintained models. Every four years replace the
battery assembly (or at other intervals if the duration test does not
satisfy the three hour requirement).
Installation and replacement of batteries
The batteries are permanently connected to the printed circuit board. In
order to replace the batteries it is necessary to cut the Red and Black
battery leads and insert a terminal block or crimp connector for joining
up the replacement battery.
WARNING:
1. When replacing batteries ensure correct type and
polarity.
2. Do not connect battery leads together.
Batteries must be stored in a non-metallic container with leads and
connectors insulated. Temperature range 0 - 49°C. Keep dry.
Luminaire ratings
Rated lumen output in emergency mode:
54
Nominal lumen output in emergency mode: 68
The above figures are given for checking correct operation.
Rated temperature range: 0 - 25°C
Repair Service
The electronics of this product have been carefully designed to give
trouble free operation for many years as specified by ICEL and
therefore it is important that you do not attempt to carry out repairs on
the printed circuit board.
Disposal
The battery in this unit can emit toxic materials if broken open and must
be disposed of in accordance with Local Authority requirements. Under
no circumstances must it be broken open or disposed of in a fire.
RS Components shall not be liable for any liability or loss of any nature (howsoever
caused and whether or not due to RS Components’ negligence) which may result
from the use of any information provided in RS technical literature.
