Wheel locks

Braking efficiency can be affected with dirt accumulated on
tires. Keep the wheel locks clean by wiping them with a
damp cloth to remove dirt.  Lubricate the pins on which the
levers pivot.

Inspect for proper
locking operation at
least once a week

Wheel axles

Remove hair or accumulated dirt

When necessary

Tires

Excessively worn or cracked tires MUST be replaced.

Inspect tires once a
week.

Hand Rims

Excessively scratched hand rims ought to be exchanged
because they can wound the user’s hands while using the
wheelchair.  Loose handrims should be tightened by a
qualified technician.

When necessary

Frame

Keep the wheelchair clean for optimal comfort of the user.

At least once a month,
depending on use
conditions

Caster wheels

The area between the fork and the front wheel should be
kept clean. Dirt accumulation can cause excessive wear of
caster wheel bearings. To do so, remove the front caster by
disassembling it from the fork. Remove all dirt, and then
reassemble

Inspection should be
made once a month or
more often depending
on surface type &
conditions

Caster Bolt

If the bolt that connects the caster fork to the wheelchair
frame is found to be loose, it should be tightened.

When necessary

Detachable
elements

Check the condition of detachable elements of the
wheelchair.  If screws are loose they should be tightened.

Inspection should be
made once a month.

Upholstery

Check for sagging, rips or tears

At least once a month,
depending on use
conditions.
