5. If undamaged, use a clean cloth to wipe the air filter clean of dust and debris.
CAUTION:
Do not use compressed air to clean the air filter as this can damage the filter.
6. Replace the air filter, put on the cover and secure the knob in place.
Spark plug maintenance
1. Wipe the air filter cover and remove the cover.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the end of the plug. Clean out debris from around the
spark plug.
3. Using a spark plug wrench, remove the spark plug.
4. Inspect the spark plug:
a. If the electrode is oily, clean it using a clean, dry rag.
b. If the electrode has deposits on it, clean with a wire brush.
c. If the white insulator is cracked or chipped, the spark plug needs to be replaced.
5. When installing a new spark plug, adjust the plug’s gap to 0.023” - 0.028” (0.6 - 0.7mm). Do
not pry against the electrode or the insulator, the spark plug can be damaged.
6. Install the new spark plug or the cleaned spark plug into the engine. Gasket-style:
Finger-tighten until the gasket contacts the cylinder head, then turn additionaly for about
1/2 - 2/3 rotation. Non-gasket-style: Finger-tighten until the plug contacts the head, then
turn additionaly for about 1/16 rotation.
7. Apply dielectric spark plug boot protector (not included) to the end of the spark plug and
reattach the wire securely.
Fuel filter replacement
To prevent serious injury from fire: Replace the fuel filter in a well-
ventilated area away from ignition sources. Do not smoke.
1. Wait for the engine to cool completely before proceeding.
2. Wear protective gear including, ANSI-approved safety goggles, NIOSH-approved
dust mask /respirator, and nitrile gloves.
3. The fuel filter hangs inside the fuel tank.
4. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel tank using a hooked wire and replace with a new
fuel filter.
5. Clean up any spilled fuel.
6. Wait for at least one hour before use to allow all residual fuel vapors to dissipate. To
prevent fire, do not start the engine while the smell of fuel hangs in the air.
Cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication schedule
NOTICE:
This maintenance schedule is intended solely as a general guide. If performance
decreases or if equipment operates unusually, check systems immediately. The maintenance
needs of each piece of equipment will differ depending on factors such as duty cycle,
