ADVICE ON ANTIPOLLUTION, FUEL ECONOMY AND DRIVING
(continued)
General hints
•
Electricity is “fuel”; switch off all
the electrical components which
are not really needed.
However, keep the lights on
when visibility is poor.
•
Use the air vents. Driving with the
windows open will increase fuel
consumption by 4% at a speed of
62.14 mph (100 km/h).
•
For
vehicles
with
air
conditioning
,
the
extra
fuel
consumed in the urban cycle can
be as much as 2 litres per 100 km:
switch the system off when it is
not needed.
• When filling the fuel tank, avoid
filling to the brim to prevent any
overflow.
• Do not leave an empty roof rack
fitted to the vehicle.
• It is better to fit a trailer for bulky
objects.
• When towing a caravan, fit a wind
deflector and adjust it carefully.
• Avoid
using
the
car
for
door-to-door calls (short journeys
with long waits in between)
because the engine never reaches
its normal operating temperature.
Try to group your journeys.
Tyres
The increase in fuel consumption
may be due to:
• insufficient pressure,
• using non-recommended tyres.
