4. Use existing network hardware, but isolate the CobraNet and/or control network
As described in the previous section, there are many advantages to integrating the Mongoose control
network with an existing network. Since the CobraNet and the control networks use Ethernet and
are compatible, it is also possible to integrate the control network and the CobraNet network.
Many IT departments, however, are justifiably hesitant to include CobraNet audio directly on their
data networks because of the required bandwidth of CobraNet’s beat packets and audio packets.
Because of the performance impact, we strongly discourage integrating the control data network
directly with the CobraNet network. The primary advantage of combining everything on the same
network is simplification. You can use the same network equipment and can perform both data
and audio configuration and management within the same network. The primary disadvantage is
the impact on network and device performance caused by the audio traffic.
If you are required to use the same network hardware for both the CobraNet and control
networks, use a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network). Using a VLAN, you can use the same physical
hardware, but isolate parts of the network from one another. To use this approach, the network
switch must support VLAN technology.
