Design Manual

Designing Each Network

The complexity of your design for both networks depends completely on your situation. This section

provides an overview of some typical approaches as well as recommendations for which approach to

take given certain circumstances. We highly recommend separating the control network and CobraNet

network. Both networks offer similar design options, listed below. You can mix and match these options

as you see fit.

1. Direct connection, no network

This approach is useful for very simple systems.

Control Network

This is the simplest approach for viewing and configuring the Mongoose. All you need to do is

connect a computer directly to the Ethernet port on the device (using a standard Ethernet patch

cable). You can only view and configure the device to which you’re connected. If you have additional

Mongoose devices to configure, you must connect your computer directly to each device, one at a

time. This means you must be in close proximity to each Mongoose you want to view or configure.

Another possible disadvantage is the lack of Internet access from the computer.

If you have only one piece of CobraNet equipment to connect to your Mongoose, you can connect

it directly using a crossover cable. Simple, but limited to one piece of equipment.
