MD5
Message Digest 5
. An algorithm used to verify data integrity through the
creation of a 128-bit message digest from data input. Defined in RFC1321.
MIB
Management Information Base.
A database of managed objects accessed by
network management protocols. An SNMP MIB is a set of parameters which an
SNMP management station can query, or set, in the SNMP agent of a network
device (e.g. router).
ms
Milliseconds.
MSB
Most Significant Bit/Byte.
Bit n-1 in a binary number with n bits, the bit with the
greatest weight, the first, or leftmost bit.
PC
Personal Computer.
PDU
Protocol Data Units.
POS
Point of Sale.
Refers to financial transaction devices located directly in stores/
businesses, where the customer pays directly from their account.

A series of technical documents and organizational
notes about the Internet. See

RTS
Request To Send
. A modem signal line (pin 7 of DB-9 connectors), used for
hardware flow control. It is the counterpart to Clear To Send (CTS). When the
unit is ready to receive data, it sends the RTS signal to the remote host to start
transferring data.
SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol.
A set of protocols for managing
complex networks. SNMP sends messages, protocol data units (PDUs), to
different parts of a network. SNMP-compliant devices, called agents, collect and
store the data about themselves in MIBs. The agents then return this data to the
SNMP requesters. Defined in RFC1157.
SPI
Security Parameters Index.
An optional 32-bit field found in an SRTP packet. It
is used to distinguish among IP packets using IP security associations.
STX
Start of Text
. Mnemonic for ASCII 2, character that signals start of a text frame.
Subnet mask
A bit mask used to identify which bits of an IP address correspond to the
network address, and subnet portions of the address. The subnet mask has ones
in positions corresponding to the network and subnet numbers, and zeros in the
host number positions.
