Drive Belts and Clutch

On new machines or after installing new belts, check the belt tension after the first 20 hours of
operation. Check and adjust the belt every 50 hours thereafter. • When replacing belts, always

replace both belts at the same time. • When installing or adjusting belt(s), ensure that the engine and
gearbox pul

leys are aligned. • Ensure that clutch free-play is within specification before checking drive belt

tension.

To ensure optimum power transmission from the engine to the gearbox, the drive belts must be in good
condition and be correctly tensioned.

Checking and Adjusting Belt Tension

Correct belt tension is critical to machine performance and how long the belts will last. Inadequate tension
may cause the belts to slip, which will prevent correct operation and will cause excessive belt wear, glazing
etc. Too much tension will cause premature belt failure and place unnecessary stress on other machine
parts. To check belt tension:

1.  Remove the 2 bolts (

A

) securing the drive belt cover (

B

), and remove the cover.

2.  Check belt condition

– if there is any cracking, fraying, or glazing, replace both belts.

3.  Pull the clutch lever (drive system engaged) and hold in this position, then check the distance between

the belts at their closest point

– distance should be 60 to 65mm (2.4 to 2.6").

4.  If the tension requires adjustment, loosen the 4 engine mounting bolts (

C

) at the front and rear of the

engine slightly (do not remove)

– just enough to allow the engine to be moved.

5.  Shift the engine toward the front of the machine until the belt tension is correct. Ensure that the engine

and gearbox pulleys remain in alignment. If the engine cannot be moved any further and the belts remain
"loose", replace the belts.

6.  Check the distance between the 4 belt brackets and belts and ensure the gap is 1 to 3mm (0.04 to 0.12")

for the upper brackets (

D

), and 2 to 4mm (0.08 to 0.16") for the lower brackets (

E

). To adjust, loosen the

bolts securing the brackets; position the brackets as required, then re-tighten the bolts.

7.  Tighten the engine mounting bolts.

8.  Re-install the drive belt cover.

60 to 65mm
