Installation Procedure

WARNING:

When connecting the

PFAP550MS

directly to a TV set, attenuate

the output sufficiently to prevent overdriving the TV set. The input level to
the TV should be 10 dBmV

MOUNTING:

Install chassis in equipment rack (equipment rack sold sepa-

rately) by supporting the bottom and rear of PFAP550MS at the desired
elevation in rack. Line up the side holes of chassis with the tapped equip-
ment rack holes. Insert the provided screws through the side holes in the
chassis and thread into the tapped equipment rack holes. Fasten the
bottom screws first, then fasten top screws, tighten securely.

1.   Connect the F-type jumper provided from the IF OUT to the IF IN on the

rear panel.

2.   Connect  the

PFAP550MS to a 115 VAC grounded receptacle. Observe

the lit LED light indicating power is on.

3.  Connect the antenna input signal and check the level at the input test

point using a signal level meter or spectrum analyzer. The level must
be at 0 dBmV minimum for a minimum carrier to noise ratio of 45 dB.

4.   Connect the signal level meter or spectrum analyzer to the -30dB TEST

POINT (front panel) and adjust the output level control to desired level.

5.  Check the aural carrier level. It should be set at 15 dBmv below the

video carrier.

6.  Verify performance by connecting a TV to the output test point or

through an attenuator (50 dB) to the RF output. The input level to the
TV should be 10 to 15 dBmV maximum.

7.   The video and audio stand-by inputs provide a muting capability for the

PFAP550MS if the input signal is disabled.

Signal Combining Methods

The output levels of the processor should be the same as the output of
the other headend components. The

PFAP550MS processors are usually

combined with the

PFAM550MS modulator, or LBS/HBS series strip ampli-

fiers. Three methods are suggested to combine strip amplifier, modulator
and processor outputs.
A) The PHC-12G twelve channel and PHC-24G twenty-four channel com-
biners consist of two rows of directional couplers combined by a hybrid
splitter. The directional coupler combining provides high isolation (40 dB)
between the inputs. Normally, the odd channels are combined on one
row while even channels are combined on the other row of directional
couplers. The combiner loss is 18 dB per channel for the PHC-12G and
21 dB per channel for the PHC-24G.
B) The  CHC-16U/550 sixteen channel active combiner provides both
signal combining and post amplification of the headend signals. Up to 16
channels may be combined using the CHC-16U/550. The combiner gain
is 15 dB per channel.
C) The final method of combining signals uses three hybrid splitters per
headend rack. The odd channels are combined in one splitter, the even
channels in another splitter and the two splitters are combined to a single
output with a third splitter. Each rack is then combined with a final splitter
prior to the

CA-30RK550 post amplifier.
