A rule or set of rules applied to a specific interface to indicate whether a packet can be
forwarded or discarded.
File Transfer Protocol. Internet tool for accessing files linked to the Internet.
The subnet that the end-user system is on. This address, which is the e1a address of the
domain, is used as the return address when the authentication server responds.
High-level Data Link Control protocol. A bit-oriented protocol in which control codes differ
according to their bit positions and patterns.
See end-user system (ES).
A host having a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255.
An electronic device to which multiple computers attach, usually using twisted-pair wiring.
Internet Control Message Protocol. An Internet protocol that allows for the generation of
error messages, test packets, and information messages related to IP.
A collection of networks and routers using TCP/IP protocols to form a single cooperative
virtual network.
Internet Protocol. The TCP/IP standard protocol that defines the IP datagram as the unit of
information passed across an Internet and provides the basis for connectionless,
best-effort packet delivery service.
Interworking Packet Concentrator. The IPC fundamentally takes Local Area Network (LAN)
Internet Protocol (IP) traffic and concentrates the traffic onto high speed Wide Area
Network (WAN) interfaces.
Internet Protocol Address. This is a 32-bit address assigned to a host on a TCP/IP
Internet. The IP address has a host component and a network component.
Internet Protocol Control Protocol. A protocol for transporting IP traffic over a PPP
connection.
Integrated Services Digital Network. Two types of ISDN, ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI)
and ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI), provide circuit switched access to the public
network.
Internet Service Provider.
Local Area Network. A data communications network linking together computers and
peripheral devices over a short distance, usually within a building or campus, using some
form of standard control.
Media-specific Access Control. A protocol where packets transmitted over LAN ports are
encapsulated in Ethernet II MAC frames.
Media Access Control Address. Areas of memory your CPU uses to distinguish between
the various peripheral devices connected to your system when transferring or receiving
data. The MAC address is also known as the physical address.
Management Communications Controller Card. The card in a HotWire DSLAM system or
stack that is used primarily for monitoring and configuring the HotWire DSLAM.
Management Information Base. A collection of information (e.g., configuration, status, and
statistical data) within an SNMP agent that forms a database of information about the
agent which is accessible from the NMS manager. MIB II is the current standard.
The ability of a network node to send identical data to a number of end points.
A system with connections to more than one physical datalink. The data links may or may
not be attached to the same network.
