7.5 HARVESTING
TIP:
Capsules of coconut fiber or peat used
as a growing medium can be reused as long as
there isn't a tear in the paper casing. Perlite can
be cleaned and reused
TIP:
Cassettes can be cleaned in a
dishwasher at less than 45°C
Leafy greens (such as lettuce and spinach)
are best if harvested only once
Herbs (such as parsley and cilantro) can be harvested
over and over. when harvesting, leave a few leaves on
the plant for proper regrowth
Follow these guideline when harvesting:
z
Cut the plants at the base (i.e., between the leaves and roots) using a sharp knife or scissors
z
Do not pull out leaves so as to avoid uprooting the plant
z
Re-use the growing medium, or throw it away into a compost bin
z
wash empty cups and keep for future use
z
Remove empty cassettes, clean thoroughly, and return immediately to the cabinet
▪
when removing a cassette, tilt it forward gently to avoid having water drip from the back drain hole
z
Compost any plant part that does not look edible or that was in contact with the water
