2.4.2.
Outboard engine
The RSQ 450 series rescue boat is supplied with a SOLAS approved long tail outboard
engine with single propeller propulsion.
Starting the engine is done manually by means of a starter rope.
Steering is done by the helmsman by moving the tiller handle to the left or to the right.
The tiller handle has been provided with a throttle grip which can be turned clockwise or
anti-clockwise in order to increase or decrease the sailing speed.
For safety reasons the outboard engine is supplied with a safety stop switch and lanyard.
This lanyard is a coiled cord which can be stretched out to a certain length. One end of
this lanyard is connected to the safety stop switch whilst the other end is attached to the
helmsman by wrapping it around his wrist or leg.
In the unfortunate event of the helmsman falling overboard, the safety stop switch will
be activated automatically and the engine stops immediately.
To protect people in the water from getting injured by the rotating propeller, and foreign
objects getting entangled with the propeller, the engine is equipped with a propeller
guard.
