Indications
(Source: Catalogue of aids and list of aids for the health insurance funds, FRG)
The CHARLY abdominal leaning support is a combined standing aid and tilting couch.
Standing aids of this kind enable patients suffering from congenital or acquired restrictions, or loss of the controlled
ability to stand, to remain in a vertical posture for longer periods than may otherwise be achieved by raising
patients briefly to a standing position.
The object of providing patients with such standing aids is to facilitate the adoption of a vertical or almost vertical
(inclined) posture. Such standing aids are used either in preparation for teaching the patient to walk or to enable
paralytics to benefit therapeutically from standing. The benefits are improved circulation, stimulating bone metabolism,
a prophylactic measure against contracture, bedsores and thrombosis, to promote kidney function/urine discharge
and to inhibit spasticity.
Dependent upon the degree of the limitations, standing aids are indicated for:
•
complete or partial paralysis of the legs (paraplegia)
•
complete or partial paralysis of the legs and the torso (damage to the spinal cord below segment C8)
•
complete or partial paralysis of the legs, the torso and the arms (tetraplegia)
resulting from for example:
•
transverse lesion of the spinal cord
•
cerebral palsy
•
poliomyelitis
•
multiple sclerosis
Abdominal leaning supports are used also to stabilize the torso and legs. They facilitate arm function and control of
the head and help to extend the otherwise greatly restricted field of view. They are angle-adjustable from horizontal
to vertical and are also suitable for therapeutic purposes and for the food intake (feeding).
Declaration of conformity
The manufacturer, Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH, declares that this product is in conformity with the requirements
of Directive 93 / 42 / EEC.
