DNS — Domain Name System. A system for
converting host names and domain names into IP
addresses on the Internet or on local networks that
use the TCP/IP protocol.

IP address — Internet Protocol address. The address
of a device attached to an IP network (TCP/IP
network).

SSID — Service Set Identifier. The named assigned
to a wireless Wi-Fi network.
䢇
Wi-Fi — Wireless Fidelity. Refers to any system that
uses the 802.11 standard, which was developed by
the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE) and released in 1997.

WLAN — Wi-Fi LAN. A typically low-power network
that transmits a wireless signal over a span of a few
hundred feet and usually only to stationary devices.

TCP/IP — Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol. A communications protocol developed
under contract from the U.S. Department of Defense
to permit dissimilar systems to network.

WEP — Wired Equivalent Privacy. An IEEE standard
security protocol for 802.11 networks. Superseded
by WPA and WPA2.

WPA/WPA2 — Wi-Fi Protected Access. A security
protocol for wireless 802.11 networks from the Wi-Fi
Alliance.
