Solution

To measure the coating thickness for a
steel plate with a zinc coating, and a film
coating on top, Using Automatic Mode, first
measure the thickness of both the zinc
layer and the top coating. Next, switch to
NFE measurement mode and measure the
thickness of the film. The thickness of the
zinc layer is the difference between the two
measurements.

<

Example

>

Instrument is able to use both magnetic induction for measuring
thickness of coating on iron and steel, and eddy current method
for measuring thickness of coating on non-ferrous material.
Instrument can automatically select method of measurement.

This mode is used to set the reading to the
thickness of the Calibration-foil. Typically, the
thick Test Film is used for calibration

(Calibration-foil), but if only measuring thinner
films, the thin Test Film can be used (Control-foil).

Please replace battery.

Please correct battery orientation.

Please initialize meter.

Using FTM-50FE

on non-ferrous

substrate material.

Battery is inserted
with wrong polarity.

Probe is not making
good contact.

Coating is too thick.

Fault has occurred.

FTM-50FE only measures coating on iron
based material. For non-ferrous substrate,
please use the FTM-52FN.

Please press the probe face firmly against
the surface to be measured.

If coating thickness varies it may be
above measurement range and therefore
impossible to measure.

Substrate material
has low magnetic
reactance.

Measurements can not be made on
substrate with weak ferro-magnetisim,
such as stainless steel.

Calibration is not
correct.

Please re-calibrate, and make sure probe
face is firmly pressed against
measurement surface.

Surface is rough.

Take several measurements at different
positions and average the result.

Surface is uneven.

Take several measurements at different

Measurement at
edge of surface.

Magnetic flux is uneven near the edge of
a surface; Please take measurement
away from the edge by at least 15mm.

Temperature shift
between calibration
and measurement.

Calibrate the instrument at the same
temperature as the measurements.

Surface has
residual magnetism.

Coating deforms
when being
measured.

Place Calibration-foil on top of surface,
measure, and then subtract the thickness
of Calibration-foil for correct value.

Probe or Calibration
film was dirty during
calibration.

Please remove any contamination and
recalibrate.

If surface has magnetic field, it may affect
measurements. Please demagnetize.
