Some scholars have started
working deliberately with
metal-detecting hobbyists.
When historians wanted to
survey the whole battlefield
at Little Bighorn to learn
more about the Sioux fight
with General Custer in
1876, they recruited dozens
of amateur metal-detectors
to help them. The hobbyists
systematically swept the
entire site, but instead of
digging up artifacts when
they heard a beep, they
marked their finds with
flags so the scientists
could take careful notes.
