OPERATION

Selecting the basic Clock Frequency

Operating the SMART CLOCK and SMART CLOCK av is very simple.
Select the required basic clock frequency for your studio set-up with the
frequency selector switches depicted in the following figure.

First use the WC SELECT switch to choose 32.0kHz, 44.1kHz or 48.0kHz
for the basic clock rate. The appropriate LED will be illuminated. By using
the switch next to the LED, the previously selected clock rate can be
multiplied by the factors of x1, x2 and x4. For the x2 and x4 settings, the
appropriate LEDs, WCx2 and WC4, will light up. In this manner, all Word
Clock frequencies ranging from 32.0kHz to 192.0kHz can be set. The clock
rate selected here serves as the basic setting for all Word Clock and audio
signals.
The factory default is set at 44.1kHz, setting the WC SELECT switch
at its center position (44.100Hz LED is illuminated) and the clock rate
multiplication switch to its lowest setting (x1).

Selecting the Front-Panel Output Signal

Two additional clock outlets are located on the front panel of the SMART
CLOCK and SMART CLOCK av. With the help of the two switches shown in
the illustration, these can be set individually, independent of the outlets on
the rear panel of the device.

Select the desired output signal type with the right-hand switch:

VIDEO,
The video clock signals set for the video generator are sent out through
the front-panel outlets (only active for SMART CLOCK with built-in P/NVSG
option)

x256,
This setting multiplies basic clock rates from 32.0kHz to 96.0kHz by a factor
of 256. ProTools™ systems manufactured by Digidesign generally require
such high-output frequencies for synchronization.

WC,
Standard Word Clock signals are output here. The function of this switch
depends on the setting of the left-hand switch.

Select the Word Clock multiplication factor for both front-panel outlets
with the left-hand switch:

x1, x2, x4,
These factors refer to the previously set Word Clock basic signal. i.e. Using
the factory setting of 44.1kHz as a reference, this clock rate can also be
output as 88.2kHz (x2) or 176.4kHz (x4).

The output clock signal is always present at both front-panel clock outlets.

For information concerning the SMART CLOCK and SMART CLOCK av
compatible output clock rates, please consult the »Frequency Tables« in the
appendix.

Selecting the Rear-Panel Output Signals

As previously described, different output clock signals can be applied to the
rear-panel clock outlets on the SMART CLOCK and SMART CLOCK av. Please
also note that signal switching always refers to each set of vertically-aligned
clock outputs. Thus, the following output groups are formed:

Group 1: OUT 1
Group 2: OUT 2
Group 3: OUT 3

As rear-panel connections are generally used for permanent cable
connections, these signal selector switches are located inside the device.
