BIKE FITTING
The ideal sitting position
A comfortable and ergonomic sitting position is key to a relaxed bicycle tour.
Foot-pedal position:
Positioning the foot on the pedal correctly allows for optimal power transmissi-
on. Use the large and small toe bones for orientation. The large toe bone should
be well in front of the pedal spindle, the small toe bone should be positioned
immediately behind the pedal spindle. In this way, the area between the ball of
your foot and the arch of your foot comes to rest directly over: the pedal spindle.
Knee plumb line and horizontal saddle position:
For this purpose, sit on the bike and hold on to a railing. As you look over the top of
your knee, the plumb line should bisect the pedal spindle. The pedal on the right
crank arm should be at 9 o‘clock, the pedal on the left crank arm should be at at
3 o‘clock. Drop a plumb line (approx. 80 cm in length) centrical under the knee cap
with, for example, a large screw nut tied to the end of it to give it weight.
If the knee plumb line bisects the pedal spindle in front [behind] then the saddle
or the seating position should be adjusted to the rear [the front].
Sitting height:
Sit on the saddle and place your heel onto a pedal, with the pedal being at its
longest stroke. You should now be able to flex your knee without moving your hip.
There are further methods to determine the sitting height, like over the step
length or the measurement via goniometer. Therefor we recommend the visit of a
professional bike fitter.
Upper arm angle & stem length:
When sitting on your bicycle, the angle between the upper back and upper arm
should be around 80 to 90°. That is the most relaxing position for the neck. If the
angle is smaller (larger), a longer (shorter) stem should be mounted.
Cockpit:
The handlebar is cranked backwards comfortably by 12° to prevent pain, especi-
ally in the median nerve distribution of the hand.
The gearshift and brake handle should be adjusted in such a way that they are in
extension of the forearm. Here, the hand forms a small jump at a reflex angle of
approx. 140°.
These bike fitting tips will prepare you optimally for your daily joy rides, and for
healthy and relaxed touring.
