Engine Break‑in
IMPORTANT: Failure to follow the engine break‑in procedures
can result in poor performance throughout the life of the engine
and can cause engine damage. Always follow break‑in
procedures.
5 Hr. Break‑in Procedure
•
Allow engine to warm‑up for 30‑60 seconds.
•
Do not exceed 3/4 throttle.
•
Avoid full throttle acceleration from idle speed.
•
Always vary throttle setting.
•
Run engine the majority of time between 3000 ‑ 4500 RPM.
•
Frequently check engine oil level. Add oil if needed. It is normal for oil
consumption to be high during break‑in period.
After Break‑In Period
To help extend the life of your power package, Mercury Marine
recommends the following:
After 5 hr. Break‑in
•
Use a propeller that allows the engine to operate at or near the top of the
maximum RPM range (See
Specifications
section) when at full throttle
with a normal boat load.
•
Do not advance the throttle until the engine runs smoothly at idle and
water temperature reaches a minimum of 54 °C (130 °F). Do not operate
at full throttle until the engine oil temperature reaches 60 °C (140 °F).
•
Follow the maintenance schedule in this manual.
