Blood glucose measurement
Alternative sampling areas
The blood sample for measuring the blood glucose content can
also be taken from other places on the body than the finger tip.
However, the difference in blood glucose levels in the fingertip and
elsewhere in the body may be significant, and samples taken from
other areas of the body may not represent the actual blood
glucose level at the moment of taking the sample*. We therefore
recommend taking the sample from the fingertip.
If you do wish to try alternative sampling areas, you should first
consult your physician or healthcare professional to discuss whether
using alternative sampling areas suits you. Please note that if you
wish to take a blood sample from an alternative area, you will need
a lancing device which is intended for that particular area.
Use only your fingertip for blood sampling in the following cases:
within two hours of eating, after exercise, when blood glucose
levels change rapidly, when you are ill, when you are stressed,
when your blood glucose level is low, if you do not recognize the
symptoms of low blood glucose level (hypoglycemia), if the result
obtained from an alternative sampling point does not correspond
to how you are feeling, or when you have taken short-acting
insulin.
