12. ATF flushing of automatic transmissions
Flushing is the process of simultaneous recov-
ery and injection of the lubricating fluid contained
within the automatic transmission.
This enables the replacement of spent ATF flu-
id with new fluid, keeping the transmission lu-
bricant level constant throughout the operation,
thus ensuring an efficient, complete and safe
replacement.
The station ATX 280 enables the control and the
automatic adjustment of the recovered and in-
jected flow in order to inject the same quantity of
fluid as the recovered one ensuring the correct
lubrication of the transmission itself during the
whole process.
12.1
Preliminary Operations
Flushing from the A/T system should preferably
be done with lubricant that has reached the min-
imum required service temperature: refer to the
gearbox technical data sheet and the manufac-
turer's maintenance booklet.
Put only ATF fluids in the new ATF
tank. Failure to do so could result
in serious damage to the station
and/or connected automatic trans-
missions. Do not put more than 25
l in the tanks.
For some vehicles, you may need to use a
mov-
ing bridge
: often the service couplings to the
transmission are at the bottom of the vehicle.
Service pipelines 1 and 2 should be connect-
ed with the vehicle off. Once the connection
points have been identified, use the appropri-
ate A/T couplings to connect the equipment
ATX 280 to the transmission.
The information needed to perform charge and
recovery cycles is primarily the type and amount
of lubricating oil contained by the automatic
transmission.
This data can be found on a plate in the engine
compartment or within the manufacturer's main-
tenance manuals.
As far as the quantity of oil is concerned, it must
be said that often the technical manuals of the
vehicles, of the systems and the information that
can generally be found, report the total quantity
of oil present in the system.
