5. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see
“Power off the server” on page 11
).
6. If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top
cover, or remove the server from the rack.

8. Remove the top cover (see
“Remove the top cover” on page 133
).
To remove the system board, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Remove the power supply unit(s) (see
“Remove a hot-swap power supply unit” on page 94
).
Step 2. Remove the processor and memory expansion tray and the expansion tray air baffles (see
“Remove the processor and memory expansion tray” on page 110
).
Step 3. Remove the fan cage assembly (see
“Remove the fan cage assembly” on page 59
Step 4. Disconnect all cables from the system board. Make a list of each cable as you disconnect it and
use it as a checklist after installing the new system board.
Step 5. Remove all the memory modules from the system board, and set them aside on a static-protective
surface for reinstallation (see
“Remove a memory module” on page 77
Important:
Record the slot number of each memory module before removing it, and make sure to
install it back to the exact same slot on the new system board later.
Step 6. Remove the PCIe riser-card if it has been installed (see
“Remove the PCIe riser-card assembly” on
Step 7. Remove the LOM adapter if it has been installed (see
“Remove the LOM adapter” on page 69
Step 8. Remove all the other adapters installed on the system board (see
Step 9. Disconnect the USB 3.0 cable of operator panel tray assembly and remove it vertically from the
system board.
