2.1 Designated
use
The speed sensor is only intended to be used for measuring tasks in the industrial and
commercial sectors. It is installed in a system and needs to be connected to special
evaluation electronics that are contained, for instance, in a position control unit or an
electronic counter.
Any other use is not considered to be designated use.
2.2 Overview
The speed sensor is intended for measuring the speed of rotational movements without
making contact.

The speed sensor is secured to the mounting device with the flange (3). The sealing
ring (4) seals the mounting device. The sensor system is located behind the measuring
surface (5). The speed sensor is correctly positioned in the mounting device using the
index pin (6). The flange of speed sensor is flattened on one side, this so-called visible
surface (7) facilitates the determination of the mounting position.
The integrated electronics are supplied with power by means of the connection cable
(1). The cable gland (2 or 9) attaches the connection cable to the speed sensor and
seals the speed sensor. The blanking plug (8) seals the unused fitting of the speed
sensor.
2.3 Function
The sensor system uses the principal of electromagnetic induction (eddy current). A
magnetic field developed by a primary coil is induced in a secondary coil pair. The
sensor scans a target wheel consisting of electrically-conductive material. Besides, the
magnetic field in the target wheel generates the
eddy current
which results in a mag-
netic eddy current field. The magnetic eddy current field damps the magnetic field of
