If the vehicle is operated for a lengthy period with play in the steering head bearing, the bearings and subsequently the bearing
seats in the frame are damaged.
–
Jack up the vehicle on the center stand. ( p. 75)

Bear down on the rear of the vehicle or jack it up on the underride guard.
The front wheel is not in contact with the ground.

Move the handlebar to the straight-ahead position. Move the fork legs back and forth in
the direction of travel.
Play should not be detectable on the steering head bearing.
» If there is no detectable play:
–
Adjust the steering head bearing play. x
–
Move the handlebar to and fro over the entire steering range.
It must be possible to move the handlebar easily over the entire steering range. There
should be no detectable detent positions.
» If detent positions are detected:
–
Adjust the steering head bearing play. x
–
Check the steering head bearing and adjust if necessary.
