EIDE Cable
Most IDE cables and connectors are "keyed" meaning they are designed only to
connect one way. As a precaution, it is important to note where "Pin 1" is located
on each device connector, so each connection can be aligned properly with
each cable connector. Virtually all IDE cables include a red (or otherwise
distinguished) stripe down the cable. The "Pin 1" location will vary on mother-
board EIDE connectors, so look carefully, and if necessary consult your hardware
manufacturer. A good rule of thumb is that this stripe will frequently be next to the
power plug of the CD-ROM drive.
When attaching the IDE cable, be careful not to twist or bend it too much. Odd
movements could cause damage to the cable, and may cause the computer not
to be able to communicate with the CD-ROM drive.
Power Cable
The power cable stretches from the computer’s power supply to the CD-ROM
itself. The power supply is a large box where the power plug connects on the
back of the machine. From this box there will be several colored wires that end
in white plastic plugs. To install the power cable, simply insert the white plug into
the CD-ROM drive’s DC Input (see Figure 3-3).
If you find other devices are using all of the available power connections, you will
need to get a power splitter (or Y splitter). To install the splitter you will need to
unplug a device’s power connection and attach the splitter. Now you can provide
power to both the CD-ROM drive and the device you disconnected.
Audio Cable
The final connection is the CD audio cable. This allows the CD music to be
played, and needs to be plugged into your sound card. This cable is keyed at
both ends, so it will only fit in one direction.
Kenwood includes an audio cable that fits most sound cards. However, sound
cards do vary. If the included cable does not fit, please consult the manufacturer
for your particular sound card.
If you do not have a sound card, or do not wish to make use of the CD-ROM
drive's CD audio features, you do not need to connect this cable. It is not
required to make your 72X or 62X TrueX™ CD-ROM Drive function.
