Steering handle / speed control
The motor has five speeds going forwards and three in reverse. The speed control can be regulated in
either direction, forwards or backwards. Turn the control anti-clockwise from 0 (Off) to increase the
reversing speed and clockwise from 0 to increase the speed forwards. The speed decreases as you
approach 0 from either direction. The figures on the handle indicate the percentage of maximum capacity.
Batteries
The motor can be powered with any 12 V battery intended for marine use. For the best results, you
should use an ORPC battery with a capacity of at least 105 Ah. As a rule of thumb, your 12 V motor
consumes approximately one ampere per hour for every kg of thrust that is generated when the motor is
operating at high speed. The true power consumption depends on the actual environmental and operating
conditions.
Keep the battery fully charged. With proper maintenance, you can rest assured that you will have a
battery in good working order when you need it. This also extends the battery’s life. Failure to charge lead
batteries within 12–24 hours is one of the most common causes of malfunctions. For optimum results,
use an adjustable ORPC charger to avoid overcharging.
If you are using a start battery to start a petrol-powered outboard motor, we recommend that you use a
separate battery for your motor.
Battery connection
•
Connect the red, positive (+) battery cable to the battery’s positive terminal.
•
Connect the black, negative (–) battery cable to the battery’s negative terminal.
WARNING:
If you are installing a lead wire contact, carefully note the polarity and follow the instructions
in your boat’s operating instructions.
NOTE:
•
Before connecting a battery, check that the steering handle is in the off position.
•
Use a suitably dimensioned cable to extend the power cord.
•
Ensure that the power cords are properly secured to the battery terminals.
•
Place the battery in a well ventilated position.
