Multiple Drive Configurations
The P4G Series motherboards include additional disk
drive subsystems you may want to make use of. Both
P4G Series boards have a Promise Technologies AT-133
IDE controller and device interfaces. The P4GS includes
both ATA-133 and a Serial ATA controller with one
onboard Serial ATA drive connector.
These additional controllers allow you to add additional
disk drives to the system over and above the four drives
supported by the standard onboard IDE controller. On
the ATA-133 boards you can connect an additional four
ATA-133 IDE, or slower, IDE devices, as needed. The P4GS
also provides a Serial-ATA connector, to which you can
connect one device.
This means that the boards with ATA-133 support eight
IDE devices and the P4GS supports nine devices includ-
ing a Serial ATA drive. If you are going to configure your
system with a large number of devices, make sure that
the wattage of the system power supply is sufficient to
support all the devices you want to install.
ATA-133 & Serial ATA Drivers
Both the ATA-133 and Serial ATA features require drivers
to operate. The Power Installer support CD-ROM disc in-
cludes Windows drivers for these features. Make sure
you install the appropriate driver if you will use either of
them. See the relevant Installation Guide on the Power
Installer for more information.
ATA-133 Cabling
The P4G Series motherboards come with one ATA-133
cable. This type of cable is required for use with the ATA-
133 connectors. The ATA-133 is similar to the supplied
ATA-100 IDE ribbon cable. Both support two devices. If
you will connect more than two ATA-133 devices to the
board, make sure you purchase an additional ribbon cable
that is specifically for ATA-133.
Serial-ATA Cabling
The P4GS motherboard comes with one Serial ATA cable.
You use it to connect a Serial-ATA device to the Serial-
ATA connector. The cable just plugs onto the onboard
connector. The connector is designed so that it isn’t pos-
sible to plug the cable on the wrong way.
Important Note
On the P4GS, connecting
an S-ATA drive disables the
ATA-133 controller’s IDE3
Master channel. The IDE4
Slave channel is still en-
abled in this configura-
tion.
