7. Control and operation
7.1 Control
The indicator light "IONIZATION" shows that the high voltage is on and ionized air is being
produced.
7.2 Control with a Simco-ION field strength meter
- Take a piece of plastic (foil) and charge it by friction.
- Measure the static charge on the plastic with the field strength meter.
- Hold the plastic 30 cm away in the XC's ionized air stream for 5 seconds.
- Measure it again. The static charge should now be gone.
7.3 Control with a piece of clear sticky tape
- Peel off a piece of tape, approx. 30 cm, from the roll and hold it vertically.
- Approach the unglued side of the tape with your hand or a grounded surface.
- The tape will now be drawn to your hand or to the surface.
- Hold the tape 30 cm away in the XC's ionized airflow for approximately 5 seconds.
- Approach the tape again with your hand or a grounded surface.
- The static charge has gone when the tape is no longer pulled by your hand.
7.4 Ion Balance Control
- The ion balance can be monitored using a so-called charge plate monitor. Follow the
instructions for use of the charge plate monitor and check that the balance is between -5 and
+5 V.
- If no charge plate monitor is available, a Simco-ION electrostatic field meter, equipped with a
test plate, can also be used. Follow the instructions for use of the electrostatic field meter and
check that the balance is between -5 and +5 V.
Warning:
- Do not check the operation by drawing a high voltage spark. Prolonged sparking can
damage the balance.
