Appendix B
TCP and UDP Port Numbers
Introduction
Ports are used by the Transport Control Protocol (TCP) and User Data Protocol
(UDP) to name the ends of logical connections which carry long-term associa-
tions. For the purpose of providing services to unknown callers, a service contact
port is defined. The following list specifies the ports used by the server process
as its contact port. The contact port is sometimes called the ‘well-known port’.
The assigned ports use a small portion of the possible port numbers. The as-
signed ports have all bits set to zero except the low-order eight bits
Port assignments
The following table provides an extract of RFC 1700 of the most-used port num-
bers—low-order eight bits of the port are specified. Additional port numbers are
listed in RFC 1700.
