Protocol Bandwidth Overheads and Requirements
■
each IPX RIP packet can only contain 50 entries, i.e., if more than 50 sta-
tions are transmitted, 2 or more packets must be used
■
each IPX SAP packet can only contain 7 entries, i.e., if more than 7 stations
are transmitted, 2 or more packets must be used
■
IPX RIP and SAP updates are sent every 60 seconds
Example bandwidth
usages for IPX RIP
For 50 IPX networks, the IPX RIP protocol requires 52 bit/s of link bandwidth.
For 100 IPX networks, the IPX RIP protocol requires 115 bit/s of link bandwidth,
and so on.
Example bandwidth
usages for IPX SAP
For 50 IPX services, the IPX SAP protocol requires 460 bit/s of link bandwidth.
For 100 IPX services, the IPX SAP protocol requires 917 bit/s of link bandwidth,
and so on.
Bandwidths used by
Spanning Tree bridging
services
The following table lists the bandwidth used by Spanning Tree bridging:
■
each bridging BPDU packet is 35 bytes/link
■
bridging BPDU packets are sent every second
Example bandwidth
usages for Spanning
Tree bridging
Bridging updates (BPDU packets require 280 bit/s of link bandwidth.
