Configuration Example—Cost-Reduced WAN
Novell IPX Routing
The parameter settings for a cost-reduced WAN using RIP and SAP for Router 1
and Router 2 is provided below. LAN configuration is a basic configuration.
When configuring a cost-reduced WAN connection using RIP and SAP,
Trig-
gered Updates
(for RIP and SAP) should be disabled and
Update Inter-
vals
(for RIP and SAP) should be set to a high value to reduce the use of
bandwidth.
Watchdog Spoofing
and
SPX Spoofing
should also be enabled
so that dial-up (switched) WAN links are be initiated just to send IPX watchdog
packets and SPX keep-alive packets to remote clients.
Cost-reductions using
RIP and SAP filtering
This cost-reduced WAN example can be further improved by using RIP and SAP
filtering to reduce the routing and service access information exchange over the
WAN link (see
“RIP Filtering”, p. 86
and
“SAP Filtering”, p. 87
).
