How Bridging Works

WAN Bridging Services

Controlled Bridging

Normal use of forwarding
tables

Bridging services usually forward all or most packets received for bridging by
default. Static forwarding tables can be set up to forward or discard specified
packets (with a specified destination or source MAC address or packet type).
That is, all packets are forwarded unless discarded by static forwarding table en-
tries.

The above diagram represents the data forwarded (unshaded area) of the total
number of packets received for bridging.

Controlled bridging

The Intel Express 8100 Router allows packets which do not appear in the for-
warding tables to be discarded. In addition, the learning function can be disabled
so that the bridge forwarding tables only contains the defined static entries. When
set up in this way, the bridge only forwards packets addressed to defined MAC
addresses, from defined source addresses and with a specified Ethernet packet
type. That is, all packets are discarded unless otherwise allowed to pass by static
forwarding table entries.
