Shifting Ge ars While Driving

Dise ng ag e the clutch (p ull the clutch leve r fully toward
the hand le b ar).

Push the toe leve r d ownward until you fe e l it stop in first
g e ar.

Re le ase the b rake leve r.
6.
Simultane ously re le ase the clutch leve r while op e ning
the throttle (rolling the throttle control g r ip re arward ) in
one smooth motion. As the clutch b e g ins to e ng ag e , the
motorcycle will move forward .

To shift to a hig he r g e ar, acce le rate smoothly to the
re comme nd e d shift p oint. Se e

char t. With a q uick motion, simultane ously close the
throttle comp le te ly and d ise ng ag e the clutch. Raise the
toe shift leve r until you fe e l it stop at the ne xt g e ar.
Simultane ously re le ase the clutch leve r and op e n the
throttle in one smooth motion.

W ithin the re com m e nd e d sp e e d rang e s (se e Re com m e nd e d
Shift Points chart), you can d ownshift to slow the m otorcycle or
to incre ase p owe r. You m ay want to d ownshift whe n clim b ing a
hill or p assing. Downshifting also he lp s to d e cre ase sp e e d whe n
com b ine d with closing the throttle .

To shift to a lowe r g e ar (d ownshift), simultane ously p ull
the clutch leve r toward the hand le b ar and close the
throttle . Move the toe shift leve r d ownward until you fe e l
it stop at the ne xt g e ar. Simultane ously re le ase the clutch
leve r while op e ning the throttle .

d am ag e , loss of traction and loss of control, which could re sult in
se rious injury or d e ath.

• Use extre m e caution whe n d ownshifting on we t, slipp e ry or othe r
low traction surface s. Re le ase the clutch leve r ve ry g rad ually in
the se cond itions.
• Avoid d ownshifting in a curve . Downshift b e fore e nte ring the
curve .
