6.9. EMERGENCY LANDING WITH ENGINE OFF
- Maintain the maximum efficiency speed;
- Look for the most suitable terrain for emergency landing. Pay attention to the power lines
(the wires are not visible, look for the poles). Slightly uphill areas are preferable.
- If possible, make a radio call for an emergency alert;
- If possible, perform a flight around the chosen area. Do not lose sight of the field;
- Close the fuel shut-off valve before landing;
- Magnetos OFF;
- Master switch OFF;
- Set FLAPS to 1/2;
- Perform the base turn and the final higher than a normal landing;
- If necessary, lose altitude setting FULL FLAP and perform a wing slip;
- When stable on final and sure to enter the field set FULL FLAP;
- Perform the flare pulling up to slower as much as possible the airplane before touch down.
The energy of the impact is proportional to the square of the speed, try to touch at the minimum
speed of subsistence. At the same time, keep a good margin on stall speed during the approach; if
the contact occurs in normal flight attitude, the structure of the aircraft will likely absorb the energy
of the impact protecting the occupants. The chances of survival at an impact following a low-level
stall / spin are statistically very low, so prevent those conditions.
6.10. EMERGENCY LANDING WITH ENGINE ON
- Look for the most suitable terrain for emergency landing. Pay attention to the power lines
(the wires are not visible, look for the poles). Slightly uphill areas are preferable;
- If possible, make a radio call for an emergency alert;
- If possible, perform a flight around the chosen area;
o
If the chosen field could cause extensive damage to the aircraft, perform an
emergency landing with engine off;
o
If the chosen field is safe for landing, perform a normal or short landing.
