8.2 Activating FlashCopy
IBM System Storage DS6000 licensed functions are managed using the Disk Storage
Feature Activation (DSFA) application. Also, the DS6000 licensed functions are activated by
the installation of feature activation codes into the 1750 system.
The feature activation codes are made available by IBM and are obtained using the DSFA
(Disk Storage Feature Activation) application at:
http://www.ibm.com/storage/dsfa

Appendix C, “Licensing” on page 525.
8.2.1 Management
The Disk Storage Feature Activation (DSFA) application can be used to:
򐂰 Assign an order confirmation code
򐂰 Select the license scope
򐂰 Assign the license value
򐂰 Deactivate a licensed function
These activities are referred to as the “management” activities that you can perform with the
DSFA application and in relation to the DS6000 licensed functions.
Order confirmation code
With the purchase of the 52xx feature number, IBM provides an order confirmation code. To
activate the function in your machine, you must assign the order confirmation code to your
1750 system (using the 1750 base enclosure serial number). This activity is performed using
the DSFA application.
You will not be able to retrieve a feature activation code for a purchased licensed function
until you have assigned the order confirmation code to the serial number of the 1750 for
which it was acquired.
License scope
Licensed functions are activated and enforced within a defined
license scope
. License scope
refers to the type of storage, and therefore the type of servers, that the function can be used
with:

Fixed Block (FB): the function can be used only with data from Fibre Channel-attached
servers.
򐂰
Count Key Data (CKD): the function can be used only with data from FICON-attached
servers.
򐂰
Both FB and CKD (ALL): the function can be used with data from all attached servers.
In particular the license scope of FlashCopy is multiple: it can either be FB, CKD, or ALL. For
this reason, when ordering FlashCopy, you must plan ahead what your point-in-time copy
requirements will be. Example 8-1 on page 66 illustrates a sample case.
