CAUTION
: Many scanner operators calibrate on the border of the photographic print or artwork. In an
ICC workflow this may invalidate the profile’s color balance, introducing an opposite color cast to the
resulting scan.
Orientation and cropping
The target scan must be upright and right-reading with the text block in the lower left-hand corner.
Some software requires the target to be exactly square, i.e. rows and columns exactly horizontal
and vertical. If necessary, rotate the target in Photoshop prior to creating the profile.
Precise cropping is usually NOT necessary in Photoshop. If desired, rough-crop the target to about
two or three patch-widths larger all round.
The profiling software should ask you to locate the position of the target’s corners with a cursor, in
effect “cropping” the target scan. Cropping methods and tools vary but the HCT’s cropping points
(shown below) are the same for all software. Position the profiling software’s crop tool on the small
crop marks embedded in the target. Corner marks may differ slightly from the illustration. Some
HCTs contain small arrows pointing to the corner points.
If the crop marks are difficult to see, simply align the crop tool on the outside edge of the outer-most
patches, as shown here.
